Several types of plastics used for beverage packaging
At present, there are several types of plastics used for beverage packaging:
1, PE (polyethylene):
PE is the world’s largest synthetic resin and the most expensive plastic packaging material. Polyethylene products are divided into low density, medium density and high density. Among them, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) has a high degree of crystallinity, and its hardness, airtightness, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance are good, so it is widely used in blow molding to form hollow containers such as bottles. Utilizing the characteristics of PE heat sealing performance, the containers made of various composite materials can hold various beverages such as lemon juice and juice.
2. PVC (polyvinyl chloride):
PVC can be roughly classified into three categories: hard products, soft products, and paste products. The seamless line of PVC bottles produced by the injection-blow method has a thin and uniform wall and can contain carbonated beverages such as cola and soda. The PVC bottles produced by extrusion blow molding are only suitable for juice and mineral water.
3. PP (polypropylene):
The development of polypropylene transparent packaging bottles is a hot spot in plastic packaging at home and abroad in recent years. With the successful development of the transparent modifier-nucleating agent, 0.1%-0.4% sorbitol xylene (benzaldehyde) nucleating agent is added to ordinary PP, and the highly transparent PP bottle produced can be widely used. In the beverage packaging that requires high-temperature filling such as concentrated sterilization, such as concentrated juice, its price is suitable, pressure and temperature resistance, and it is a new rival of PS, ABS, PET and PE bottles.
4. Polyester (PET or PETP):
The PET bottle produced by the two-axis stretch blow molding method has good transparency, high surface gloss and a glass-like appearance, and is the most suitable plastic bottle for replacing the glass bottle. In recent years, China’s PET bottle production has developed rapidly and is widely used in various beverages such as tea beverages and juices, such as 600ml, 1.25L, 2L and 2.5L PET bottles. The different volumes are for individuals and families. The different needs, praised by the majority of consumers.
There is also a more luxurious packaging material usually for cosmetics – Acrylic
Acrylic cosmetic bottles, which have the appearance of glass bottles and the low-cost characteristics of plastic bottles, make the growth of other cosmetic bottle packaging containers a large market share. However, behind the rapid growth, we found that it has almost no application in other packaging fields.
We can analyze that in the food field, acrylic plastic bottles are difficult to meet the food standard, which makes it difficult to enter the food packaging field. In the chemical industry, chemical products often require low cost. Compared with PVC and PP materials, the cost of acrylic plastic bottle packaging is difficult to have a competitive advantage. In the field of pharmaceutical packaging, acrylic packaging is too luxurious to have a PET bottle with better performance.
Therefore, improving the performance of acrylic plastic bottle packaging materials and adapting it to a wider market is the only way to maintain continued market growth. Otherwise, it is difficult for acrylic plastic bottles to have new market breakthroughs.
